if you bought the sand from the local big box store there will be a lot of dust that could get into your filters impeller and cause problems, rinse well. if you are getting the sand from nature there could be contaminates you do not want to expose your fish to. in this case you need to bake the dirt or sand in the oven for about an hour on low temp.
