Hi,

It's a tough question because the exact figure is not known (The number of species is continually rising, as more new species are discovered). Please remember that there are 2 "types" / "categories" of fishes: marine fishes (living in saltwater. e.g: oceans, sea), or freshwater fishes (living in rivers and lakes). There are some 25,000 known species of fishes today (of both "types"), about 58 -60% live in the ocean. Although there is much less freshwater habitat (compared to marine) this type produced more species over the time (compared to marine). The reason is probably due to the fact that freshwater habitats are more isolated (so each one is a "world" of it's own).
