Laws vary from state to state and depending on the work you do the law may or may not apply < family owned, private, charity > your employer claims it was a hardship for them ? Maybe legally they could have replaced you for as they see it. Abandoning your job ?  However i think you should consult a lawyer with expertise in occupational law / injury to see if you qualify.
