How do you feel about privacy intrusion on the internet?

Do you think the internet has changed the world in a more positive or negative way? How has it affected your life? For the better or the worse? Do you think too much of our privacy has been stolen here? I looked my name up today and I found a letter posted I had written to a news anchor, and also a listing of a donation I had made to an organization. I was quite surprised to say the least.

Yes, I think the internet has changed the world in a positive way but, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. One has to know, that everything you text into a blog or chat can be seen by everyone. So if it is private to you, don't share it in a blog.

I was reading and responding to a post the other day from a man that was just asking people to pray for his wife. She is dying from cancer. He went on to say that she appreciated the prayers and also loved to get cards in the mail, he left his address. One person entered a prayer and then stated she would send a card and the first thing that I thought was, this might be a scam to get addresses from  bloggers here. With all the chatting I do here, if a person were to read it all, and profile me who knows what they could do if they had my address.

The point is, if we are careful and not to eager to trust strangers, we will be safe. I post nothing that I wouldn't say out loud in public. Well almost nothing...hehe....I have actually met people off the net, and it was great.

Back to the internet though. I have thrown out my phone books, encyclopedia, dictionary, everything. We pay our bills over the net, do our banking. Life was never this easy. This stuff has only been around a short time, so there are a lot of bugs but I love it. It has added new dimensions to the world of pen-pals. Real time is great......Ok, I will save some room for our friends to comment too......

Thanks for the invite to the ? ...........George~

Great reply George, You are way ahead of the game. I saw that post for the prayer and card request too, and I didn't even think about it possibly being a scam. I did think perhaps they might be hoping some might send some money out of sympathy. Your point that we have to be cautious is well taken. It is very easy to get caught off guard, even for me, and I am like a soldier of caution. I also do alot over the internet. However, I have been hacked into a few times and someone tried to use my credit card. I have fraud protection which was a life saver, but I still had to go through changing credit card numbers and notifying companies of my new card number as I have automatic payments deducted. It was a bit of a hassle, but it all worked out. Thank you for writing. Bring you and your wife and Beau over for pizza, but make sure you bring a large container of your special pasta sauce. mmmmmmm Sauce ala George

If my kids have a good life, I will be happy

Thanks for the invite, monkeyface. Yes, like George said; this is a great tool. Similar to a razor knife. You want to keep it under lock, and key; so the kids don't get a hold of it. But here, there are several kids. I try not to ever put down my full name, unless there is a secure link set up. Your browser will look for credentials, and show the security level. Sad to say, but I have names rearranged on my email accounts. Your browser is set up to look for specific words, or groups of words; so when you set it to find your name, it will look; until it can find it - everywhere! I run a check of my full name periodically, to make sure that I can't be located. Bottom line is that where it is necessary to either use my account, or credit; I do use my correct billing info; with the secure link. Otherwise, short, and sweet.

Hi Monkeyface , I too Thank you for the invite .  I agree with George and Chucho , the internet is a great but does have it draw backs . I also pay most of my bills on line , it is quick and convenient .  I also have placed fraud protection on my credit cards due to hackers , I up until now have not had a problem ,have some family members who have .  I don't like the ideal of someone being able to search my name and within seconds can obtain an address , complete with directions to my door .  And of course the satelite shots of my home . I work with a horse youth group , went on line to print some information on the word    " Equus " .  Where I came across a Yedda link , which took me DIRECTLY to several conversations on questions BETWEEN FIFTHBEATLE AND I . Needless to say I DID NOT print those out for the kids !  While I understand Yedda is a public forum , It is still an odd feeling looking at links that say Equus said ......... Fifthbeatle said ............ Click to read more .

Wow, interesting responses from you Chucho and Equus. I am learning alot more about the internet from your answers. I never thought to look up my Yedda name. My son looked up his name and found incorrect, inflamatory things about him. I wonder if one can take legal action or are we stuck with what is on there? I also never thought to not write my full name on sites that seem legit. I have done that many times. I am not savy on these things. Thanks for writing! Very helpful.

That's why I go behind people that post their email addresses, and try to get them to delete the post. I hate seeing somebody's email, knowing that maybe one of our tourists might mess with their heads, or their personal lives.

Equus, I just looked up my scrren name for Yedda and other people's names here and they have printed out whole conversational pages of what is said on here. My email address was even on there. I am shocked quite frankly. This may determine whether or not I stay at Yedda. How does everyone else feel about that? Do you mind your screen name here being listed on google, etc. I also found my screen name monkeyface being used by someone else on a Yahoo Question and Answer forum. This stinks. Welcome to the real world.
