My fearful and angry 8 year old son

Since about the age of 7 yrs. 6 months, my previously happy 8yrs. 4 months son has been anxious and angry.  He's afraid of elevators, theme park rides, the dark, etc.  He has also been angrier than before - is easily angered, even over little things like being asked to turn off the TV or come to dinner.  He has been diagnosed with ADD and is on stimulant medication, which does help him focus.  I don't know if the anger is all related to the ADD, or if there is more going on.  He does have friends at school, but I worry that he will lose them if he can't learn to manage his feelings.

How do I find the time?

Hi Belle

I know what you are going through is tough as a few of my friends have kids with ADD.  You should try to talk to his Doctor and ask about the anger issues because the medication should be helping with these issues and if it is not then they may need to try a different medication.  If he has friends at school that is postive.  You might want to try something like art therapy for him but this should come from the educational psychologist, are you still registered with one?

I hope this helps

Good luck

Hi Dals -- I think I will change his psychiatrist, as his current one didn't have much to say on the topic.

Thanks for answering!

Hi Belle,

It could be a reaction to his ADD medicine.. a side effect.  Or possibly something happened to him that has him upset.. or just that he is confused and doesn't know how to deal with his feelings.

Either way please don't delay calling the doctor and following up on this.  If the response to your worries is to tell you it's just a phase.. or doctor thinks you are overreacting... Keep going till you get a doctor who takes you seriously and shares your concern for your son.  Trust your intuition on this one.

Clearly this is not going away on it's own.. He would benefit from talking to a therapist.. and finding a healthy way of dealing with his anger.

Let us know how things work out.. wish you the best.
