A father kills his daughter over hijab

A Canadian man has been charged with murdering his own daughter, and her friends say the two clashed over her refusal to wear a Muslim head scarf.

Aqsa Parvez, 16, of Mississauga, Ontario, was rushed to hospital in critical condition Monday after a man made an emergency call in which he claimed to have killed his daughter, police said. She died late Monday night.

The girl's friends said in interviews Tuesday that Aqsa loved shopping for clothes and clashed with her family over her reluctance to wear the hijab, a traditional veil or head scarf for devout Muslim women.

The girl's father, Muhammad Parvez, 57, made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning and was remanded in custody pending another court appearance Wednesday. Aqsa Parvez's brother, Waqas Parvez, 26, is facing a charge of obstructing police and remains in custody pending a Dec. 14 hearing.

How can a father kill his own daughter over something like this? Doesn't all religion (whatever the religion is) value life above everything else? Was this considered an honor killing?

"Wilson! I know you're in there! I can hear you caring." - Dr. Gregory House

Whether it was an honour killing, I can't be certain. I can be certain, however, that any religious beliefs that lead to killing others - especially one's own family - are dangerous and barbaric. I have witnessed the videos of stonings, and while I have a strong stomach, even I was nearly sick.

Sadly, not all religions value life above all else. The extremists in any group generally value rules above all else. Having once been a fundamentalist Christian myself, I look back and find it terrifying - but I can also tell you that I believe the reason people go down this track is often related to a need for control in their lives. For whatever reason, they feel helpless or lost, or out of control, or without direction in their own lives, and the rules and structure of religion help remedy this. But for some, it goes beyond guidance and becomes all-encompassing and all-dominant. Some also have a desperate need for family, which their fellow adherents effectively become, and the extremist will go to any length to preserve this - even long after they have a biological family of their own.

An extremist will claim that the reason they are as they are, is because (insert various names here; Jesus, Allah, etc.) is in control of their life; that everything they do is for their god. On the contrary: the rules have become their god, and everything they do is for the rules.

Everything is black and white with these people. There is little wiggle room, if any at all. Black and white thinking is a dangerous thing, because there are many shades of grey in the world - these people cannot see them. You are either good or bad, up or down, and with them or against them. Indeed, despite the Christian scripture saying, "he who is not against us is on our side" (Mark 9:40), most extremists are more likely to remember the verse, "He who is not with Me is against Me" (Matthew 12:30 and Luke 11:23) - and they live by it. If you don't believe as they do, whether you know it or not, you are working for "the devil".

Sadly, Islam is a religion that also dictates that women are inferior to men - the Qur'an states that "Men are in charge because Allah made men superior to women. Therefore righteous women are devoutly obedient to men. And if ye are afraid that a woman might be disobedient to you, first berate her, and then immure her, and then scourge [idrib] her.” — Qur’an 4:34. It sets the scene for abuse of people based solely on their gender.

So, when people take their religion literally and seriously, with black and white thinking, it's not surprising that it leaves the door wide open for tragedy - such as in the case of Aqsa.

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.

I agree with what foxygoddess said. In Israel, there have been women (majority Israeli Arab) killed based on honor killings. Recently, a story that made national news (with a happier ending) on the same topic: "Police Thwart Plot To Commit Honor Killing Against Druze Beauty Contestant"- http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Culture/10825.htm
