How,to know when a friend is a friend?

A friend dosen't tell someone your secrets or problems, gives good advise and is there for you without asking. Never puts you down but tells you the truth. They consider your feelings and you can call them whenever you need and they don't complain. So many ways to measure a friend the list goes on.

When you need help, you find out who your real friends are.  All the fakes will forget they know you.

The first two answers were very good. I'd also suggest that you spend some time considering what friendship means to you, then examine the relationship in that light. You might also consider what you're willing to put in to the relationship--uneven friendships don't work well for anyone.

I've always had trouble with this. It hurts when you find out that a friend isn't the person you thought. But think, who's the person who's been there the most. When you have troubles who do you go to? When you think of someone you trust who enters your mind. If you have someone like this, try letting them in a bit more.It's hard to do, but if they listen to your secrets, and you can trust them to keep them, then don't let that person go. If you don't have anyone like that, look around for someone with similar interest. Or better yet, find someone who  looks lonely, and reach out to them if you do they will always be your friend.

When they are there when you really need them to be, and if you ever have an arguement they will try their hardest to sort it out.

When it's been a while, when you guys are ultimately comfterble w. eachother, when you can trust this person and they can trust you, when thier willliing to do anything for you, a friend you can come to for help. To me, that's basically an awsome friend.

A friend is there for you without asking for anything in return.

A friend u sometimes hang out with a best friend always calls and wants 2 see u. A friend never tells u a deep secret a best friend tells u all of them. A friend who knows u well might talk about u behind ur back a best friend always says 2 other people ur great. A friend when shes over ur house asks 4 something 2 drink a best friend opens the fridge and makes herself @ home. A friend won't tell u if her boyfriend broke up with her, a best friend would cry on the fone as soon as it happens.
