When does colic show up in a new baby and doesn't it go away in about 10-12 weeks?

Children are God's gift to the world...

From what I remember from one of my own children, colic is usually worst when babies are around 6 to 8 weeks of age and goes away on its own between 8 and 14 weeks of age.

Colic usually appears in the first two weeks and clears up around 3-4 months.  If your baby is older and still displaying colic symptoms it may in fact be reflux.  If this is the case it will often settle with the introduction of solids.  If it is reflux, especially gastroesophageal reflux it is important to try not to feed them if they are looking food but have wind.  Babies commonly try to comfort themselves through eating but in reflux babies this can lead to gluttony (when the babe eats constantly, even when they don't need to - not the Sin) which in turn can lead to pyloric valve stenosis.  One of the major symptoms pyloric valve stenosis is projectile vomiting (and I mean hitting walls metres away, not just little vomits with force).

If you want a treatment other than gripe water you can try baby acidophilus (available here in Australia from health food stores) or introducing cereal solids such as rice cereal made with Mum's milk, or the formula you usually use as early as 6 wks can be beneficial*.  Keeping bub upright during and after feeds, careful burping, sleeping bubs on a slight angle, breastfeeding as much as possible and avoiding highly acidic foods if you are breastfeeding will all help.

*Current medical advice suggests that exclusive breast milk should be given for 6 months.  I have 4 kids all of whom were under 5lbs (2.2kg)  and the solids were (are - I have twin babies) being given in consullt with docs and ,my bubs have done nothing but thrive - my eldest was 2.2kg and  is now 6 very tall and being given extension/challenging work at school - as far as we can see there have been no bad side effects (unless you count the nappies ;)
