If tou are searching jewish genealogy I recommend" jewishgen.com "and "My Heritage"

For general genealogy the" Family History Library" Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake city, Utah and also " Ancestry.com"

Make sure to get as much information from your immediate family as possible.  Find births, deaths and marriages from the pertinent county courthouses or state vital records.  Then search the census records at Ancestry or Heritage Quest, moving backwards in time.
