I have a corner hutch that is pine and stained ...

I have a corner hutch that is pine and stained with an oak color. Just bought a mahogony color dining room set. I want to change the stain on the hutch. Can I just hand sand it and restain. If so what grade sand paper do I use or is there another method I should use. Thanks
