why so many different chemicals in the workplace and home?

I'm not sure that I understood your question but I'll try my best to answer it.

For your question only we seperate the "home chemicals" into two forms; natural and man made. The most common natural chemical are named food but also on hand lotion for example you can find plant extracted chemical. The man made chemical on the other hand are all those synthetic materials such as Potassium sorbate or Sodium Hypochloride. 

The chemical in the home enviroment are made for all sort of tasks. Some of them are made to preserve your food and drink. Some of them are made to help you clean your house. Some of them inhibit burn so your laptop won't burst in flames every time you turn it on and some of them are there only to give a nice smell.

If you are worried that all those chemicals are toxic and carcenogenic take in mind that so does Nicotine, Snake venum, Cocain and much more.
