When was the 'enum' construct added to the C language?

When was the 'enum' construct added to the C language standard? How well is it supported by current compilers on various platforms, i.e., can I just assume it works?

According to this information in Wikipedia, enums were first added to the ANSI standard for C which eventually became C89.

Every standard C compiler that conforms to the C89 stnadrd or newer should have support for enum types.
