Oh... my... god...

I just watched Borat. Could somebody please tell me whether that movie was scripted or whether the people in it are just being themselves?

Those people really were just being themselves.

The frat boys from the movie are actually suing Sacha Baron Cohen because they look like racists now.

He also said he has to retire the character because now he won't be able to get away with it anymore.

I would like to add to lekki's answer that not everything is true, just some of it.

the main shots that were real were: the frat boys, the family dinner, the road show and the elevator.

"Ho My God..." was the reaction of the woman sitting behind me in the cinema when I was watching it, she went "Ho My God" every other second, it was funnier then the film!

At any rate - because a lot of people asked that question - The web site "salon" checked it out for you and you can read what was fake and what was real in every scene:

http://letters.salon.com/ent/feature/2006/11/10/guide_to_borat/view/?show=all

Also, take into consideration, that with the power of really smart editing, it's very possible, that even stuff that were actually said, was said as a joke or as an answer to a specific question. Perosnaly, I'm a lot more impressed by the hype and media that this movie invoked then by the actual film.

you could call borat the first dynamically scripted movie - ever. the film had a basic plot line and for each scene, the producers, director and borat knew beforehand at least part of what they wanted to accomplish in the scene in order to progress the story. but except for pamela anderson and the prostitute (and obviously borat and azamat, that goes without saying) all the participants were real live people who thought they were being filmed for a documentary. most of the plot progression was made through either narration or scenes that only the actors played in, not so much in the scenes with real people.

for example (of which baron-cohen detailed in a recent interview), the scene at the church was used in the plot to show how borat moved from being depressed to being reinvigorated. nobody in the church knew about that, all they knew is that borat is someone who isin the middle of a crisis and they just played their usual voodoo on him.
