According to Wikipedia: The word tomato derives from a word in the Nahuatl language, tomatl.

The Nahuatls were an Indian tribe residing in Central America. The spanish conqistadors introduced the tomato into Europe. At first it was considered unhealthy but it soon became an important staple in Spanish cooking.
