Using electricty and laptop's battery

I'm working with my laptop an average of 8 hours a day, while it's constantly plugged into electricty.

Can it reduce the battery performence in the long term? Should I work also on battery sessions?

Unfortunately, I think it can. I own an HP Pavilion laptop which I bought in January this year. I also use it between 8-10 hours a day while it's constantly plugged in. I stumbled upon a page on the HP website where they provide a tool to check battery health and capacity. Mine was at 78% when I checked.

It's quite naturally that the battery performance decreases over time, and one of the reason is being constantly charged. Perhaps you should check your laptop vendor’s website for similar battery monitoring software to check your battery status.

There are two issues with working on AC with the battery inserted: full charge, and higher battery temperature.  With Li-Ion batteries, ideally you should keep your battery at around 50% charge and cool. See article at battetry university.com

ThinkPad laptops have an option to keep the battery at a less-than-full charge (on both Windows and Linux).

Both hmemcpy and GreenFrog are correct. However there is a simple sulotion - most laptops are able to work while connected to AC power, when the battery is not connected. The only down side ot this is that if you lose AC power for some reason, your work will be lost.

anyway - diffrent laptops use diffrent ways to charge the batteries, and the effect on battery life is diffrent. in thinkpad laptops for example, the affect of constant charging is very small.
