Eating Under Stress

If you are an emotional eater, how do you break the cycle of wanting to eat whenever you become upset or stressed?

Every story has an end but in life, every end is just a new beginning.

This is the story of my life. I have been an emotional eater for as long as I can remember. I find that not keeping unhealthy foods in the house (like chips, cookies, sweets, etc.) helps me avoid binge-eating when I'm particularly under a lot of stress. I rationalize that even though I may be stressed, I cannot "afford" (emotionally or financially) to go to the store just to buy something unhealthy to eat while I'm going through this "event." Instead, I try to walk on my treadmill or take my dogs for a long walk to get my mind off of what is bothering me. Sometimes, I will watch re-runs on tv to take my mind off of things. My twin sister finds writing in a journal helps her or reading a good book. Maybe you could keep a book handy to distract you if/when things get difficult. Good luck.

Smile, it's contagious!

Keep your hands busy doing something.  That way you can't pick up a fork or finger foods.   Try having a glass of water handy and drink. DRINK!  DRINK!  Exercise every time you think of food.  You'll slim down and break a bad habit at the same time. --- C1

That's great - thanks so much!  Yeah, my hubby and I try to keep a min. amt. of food in our house.  It's really difficult...I didn't start doing this until about 5 yrs. ago when I quit smoking - yeah, I know, that's a real shocker!  LOL

But, I really appreciate the support and great advice!

Hi carli, I believe emotional eating is also considered as one of the eating disorders. Though this problem is more psychological and mental, it needs to be treated as soon as possible. There are several online resources available where you can read more about and find help on emotional eating. One such resource is   http://www.eatingdisorder.com/food-addiction.html?utm_source=yedda&utm_medium=pv&utm_campaign=foodaddiction . Take care!

Emotional eating is a cause of weight gain that many people battle with. They fight the weight gain with diets and diet pills, which of course do not help because as soon as an emotional problem crops up again, they break the diet, feel guilty, more emotional stress due to guilty feelings and more eating. It is a vicious cycle.

When you try to cure emotional eating by other means such as diet, it is like cutting weeds with a lawnmower and hoping that they will never grow again. Instead they look fine just after being cut, but soon grow back ten times bigger and stronger. Unless you pull the weeds out by the root, they will continue to grow.

Unless you remove the cause of your emotional problems, you will always have the extra stress of weight gain from emotional eating. There is an extremely good course available by Dr. Frank Smoot, which is inexpensive and helps you to remove the weeds by the root and overcome emotional eating. People who describe the results of this course all comment how they lose weight effortlessly and without diet, and that the weight is gone permanently.
