How to ease baby's pain of growing teeth?

What can be done to ease the pains of a baby whose teeth are growing?  We tried various gels (like OraGel Baby), and a friend told us to rub Olive Oil on the pacifier.  Any other ideas?

It really is a discomfort, a lot of sleepless nights. Teething pain remedies varies from child to child, I think you should try and see what is suitable for your child . One thing is for sure most gels are short term solutions. Here are a couple of long/short term solution:
1. Massage- rub his gums with a clean finger firmly and gently, in the beginning it's a bit uncomfortable but later he relaxes more.
2. Anything cold- you can freeze terrycloth toys, wet washcloths, teethrings, applesauce, yogurt, grinded food-make sure they are not solid frozen and too hard for the baby. Also beware of giving the child something he can choke from.
3.Long term-Infant Tylenol ,ibuprofen, advil, pain relievers will last for a long time 6-8 hours.
Relax the baby rock him and comfort him to get his mind off the pain.Give him a warm bath before he goes to sleep cover him tightly. After a good night's sleep, you will find your baby is better able to cope with the distress of teething and you will be too.

Give the baby rubber toys to play with. They bite them and it helps. There are special toys for this specific purpose - that you put in the fridge before use. The low temp helps.

About the olive oil - I wouldn't try it before 9 months - as olives might cause alergies and shouldn't be used at an early age.

 Good luck.

Go Yedda!

We used Plastic toys specially designed for this - they have liquired inside which you freeze - so it stays cold.

We also used TGEL (not sure about the spelling) - seemed to be working

Take it easy...

This is very painful period for the babies. You should:

1) give them special rubber toys for biting and playing. Biting it will reduce the pain.

Always check for the body temperature, the body temperture shoots due to pain. Use wet clothes and paracetamol syrup to lower the fever. After consulting your physician and dentist ask them for some hypnotic so that your baby may sleep properly in these pain days.
