My LG DVD-Rom drive (reads DVDs, burns only ...

My LG DVD-Rom drive (reads DVDs, burns only regular CDs) is making me angry.

I haven't used it to watch DVDs for over a month, and now it doesn't read DVDs. By that I mean, when I choose to explore the drive it shows the DVD is empty, like there's nothing on it.

It's working just fine with regular CDROMs.

I know it used to work before, both with original DVD films and with burned DVDs with several VOB files.


Any idea? Could it be the eye reading the DVD?

I would first recommend that you try one of the cleaning CDs (which is always good to run once in a while to keep the dust off the drive's eye.

The DVD that you tried to watch was a data DVD or did it contain a movie?

If it contains a movie it might be related to zone issues (though a bit far fetched, but who knows).

In any case, if you have another computer accessible, I would try to see if another computer is capable of reading this DVD, just to eliminate the assumption that the DVD itself is not OK (which can happen from time to time).

If you have a drive that is not very new you might be trying to read a DVD+R and your drive might not support it.

I don't remember if I burned it as data or as a movie actually but... 

If it contains a movie it might be related to zone issues...

The very same DVD worked just great a while ago.

 If you have a drive that is not very new..

The thing that really sucks is it's only a few months old (maybe six months?). That's not really old, right?

Will try the cleaning CD though, thanks for the tip.

Hi Sarit,

Cleaning the DVD would be a great first step.

Don't forget to try this DVD on another computer (if you have access to one) and also try to see if your drive reads another DVD, prefferably an original one, or a burned one that you are 100% certain should work. 

If the DVD won't work on another machine, it might be a burnning issue and this disc died while being burnt.

Basicly your computer allows you to change zones for couple of times before it locks on a specific one. Maybe a while ago your zone was set to X while now it is set on Y.

I don't thinks this is the problem but it's good to know :)
