Do you have dry skin?

Do you have dry skin?  I have been experimenting with onion juice as a cure for dry, cracking skin on the hands (caused by cold dry weather) and those dry skin patches people develop on their elbows and knees.  It seems to work very well.  Just take a slice of fresh onion and rub the affected part until it it is covered with onion juice.  It burns in open wounds, but they seem to heal twice as fast, almost overnight.

If you are willing to to try this at home, I would like to hear the results.

I happen to like the smell of onions.  Other people must too, or they wouldn't eat them.

RalpMD, there are lots of reasons for dry skin.  Some, like mine, are caused by the weather being very cold and dry. This dries out my hands the worst and makes them crack and bleed.  Or it did before I used onion juice on them.  I've tried lots of creams and lotions, and you have to keep applying them over and over, and I never found one that worked well.  I rubbed my hands with chopped up onion and my skin immediately stopped being dry, without that greasy feeling lotion gives.  The cracks and bleeding healed over night and the dryness hasn't returned.  Since then I have tried rubbing onion on my knee, where I have a patch of psoriasis, that is dry skin caused by a kind of skin disease that is very common.  It affects many parts of the body, but usually knees and elbows.  I rubbed onion on my knee one day and the following day one time.  It has helped a lot. That is why I posted this question, to see if other people were willing to try this treatment on themselves.

As I said before, there are lots of things that cause dry skin, and I don't know what causes yours.  There are many different types of skin diseases including auto-immune problems (which is what causes psoriasis on the knees and elbows).

If your dryness is caused by environment, try rubbing onion on the affected area for a couple of minutes.  It should feel better almost immediately and clear up visibly overnight.

Other than this, I have no recommendations for creams or lotions of any type.  None of them worked as well or pleased me.

Seeing a doctor is a good option.  If your problem is caused by a disease of some type they can decide what kind it is and prescribe a topical creme, shot or oral medicine to conteract it.

I appreciate your input, However I personally have extremely sensitive epidermus aside from being dry , I would normally have no problem trying out your homemade solution, However I would have to apply it to my face which I don't feel to comfortable applying onions anywhere near my face or eyes for that matter, But like I said I do appreciate your input on this matter and I hope you get your mild case of psoriasis under control ( which it sounds already like you do) And just for the record : Psoriasis is a chronic disease of your immune system that appears on the skin.   Thank you and good luck

p.s. If you really believe that your onion mix does the job why dont you contact a pharmecutical tech . And ask him/ her what it would take to put it together as a fda approved cream ... and who knows maybe you'll be the next millionaire !!!... Good luck either way!!  Ralph L. M.d., M.S.

I mentioned before that psoriasis is caused by auto-immune problems, so you didn't have to restate it.

As for marketing this as a remedy for sale, that is not my style.  Plus, I don't know how well it would store if I tried to extract the juice and distribute it as lotion.  Part of the joy of onions and the reason you don't want to put it on your face is that it gives off sulfuric acid fumes.  This may have a lot to do with why it works.  There is a chemical reaction going on with the juice as it is exposed to air, and the fumes aer part of it.  I have no clue what other chemicals are involved.

Secondly, I don't know enough about how well it works.  It seems to work fine on me, but you have heard of the placebo effect.  It needs to be tested on other people, which is why I started this particular blog, to find other people willing to try it.

It is simple enough to try, just cut a slice of onion and rub it on one of your hands, and leave the other for a control.  Or pick a spot on one leg.  If your skin is really sensitive, maybe a very small spot, to make sure it doesn't hurt (like I said earlier, in an open wound it burns, but the wound heals very, very quickly).

If you find it works, and want to apply it to your face, cover your eyes with a damp cloth so the fumes can't get to them.
