Cucumbers in Dove Shower Gel?

As I was using the Dove shower gel, I noticed it says "Cucumber and Green tea"...

I can't help but wonder, does it really contain cucumber???

Looking at the list of ingredients does not reveal any traces of cucmber:

"Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate/Sodium C12-13 Pareth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Parfum, Lauryl Glucoside, Acrylates Copolymer, Camellia Sinensis, Cucumis Sativus, Sorbitol, Lactic Acid, Irea, Sodium Lactate, TEA- Lactate, Seine, Allantoin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Propylene Glycol, Glycol Distearate, Styrene / Acrylates Copolymer, Laureth-4, Sodium Chloride, Citrci Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Alpha-Isomethyl lonone, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, CI 42053, CI 47005." (scary stuff!)

This is really important. Obviously I am not going to shower with cucumbers. I don't mind showering with Sodium Benzoate and Benzoic Acid, but cucumbers! A man got to have some dignity.

So, does it contain cucumbers or not?

Cucumis Sativus sounds awfully like Cucumber.  Heck, even the wikipedia entry for Cucumber says its Latin name is "Cucumis Sativus".  Well, now I know what my salad contains...

Sorry Yaniv - I suspect your dignity is doomed!

I'm sorry to inform you, but you probably are going to the shower with a cucumber. Dove is a big company, they would not false advertise - it will cost them too much if they are sued for not having cucumber when they said they did. However, they did not say in the package how much cucumber they used or which parts - so maybe that's the source of some of the water or the citric acid - basically it's pretty negligable between different colorings and other chemicals.

An article about green cosmetics in Time out NY a couple of weeks ago said something like "don't was with anything you won't put in your mouth" it's a pretty hard rule to follow, mine is "try not to wash or eat anything that contain chemicals that have number instead of names"

I  just started to use this soap and first of all the ingredient list is about a 3rd of the one you are using (always a good sign) and all of them are basically edible (though probably not stuff I would want to put in my mouth. A friend of mind switched all her cosmetics to this company and said her skin never looked so good.

This company has products that's clean everything! it's good for cleaning your house, your car, your hair, your face and even as mouthwash (though I haven't tried that one) It's really good and come in wonderful smells (My favorite in the peppermint) and all their ingredients are edible. Also, the bottles contain semi-religious rambling about washing your sins with soap so you barely even get to read the ingredient list.

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

Cucumis Sativus

is the Latin name for cucumber, and Camellia Sinensis is the Latin name for green tea. They probably use extracts of cucmber and green tea, as opposed to making a salad Laughing.

So, to sum it up, here is what I learned:

  1. Cucumis Sativus is the Latin name for cucumber
  2. Camellia Sinensis is the Latin name for green tea
  3. Lilly's favorite edible soap scent is peppermint
  4. Dove is loaded with scary chemicals
  5. My dignity is doomed
Thank you all!

As a soap maker, I use many different ingredients in my soaps.

Catnip, beeswax, honey, epsom salt lemon, pineapple, vanilla and MANY other un-manly items. Let me tell you, this US MARINE'S skin is soft and I don't worry about toxins in my soaps anymore. My Cucumber soap is a big seller as with my catnip, cinnamon and lemon soap for campers that acts as a NATURAL insect repellent and is 10X more effective than DEET.

Cucumber juice contains many vitamins and other nutrients beneficial to your skin, the astringent properties of cucumber juice are ideal for oily skin. Enjoy your showers and MAN UP!!!!!!!
