Here is some information about Dov Gruner.  In short he was a member of the Israeli underground (against the British) and was hanged at 1947.  There is a big statue in Ramat-Gan to comemorate him and a museum in Acre at the prison where he was executed (in the old city).  It's a long story, hard to put in a limitted space, and a corner-stone to the Israeli history.

Dov Gruner was a member of the Irgun. The Irgun was an underground military organization in Palestine from 1931 until 1948 that fought against the British in order to ensure an independent State of Israel. Dov Gruner was captured by the British in 1946 while he was on an operation. He was put on trial by the British and hanged for his crimes in 1947.
