I have a 5 month old pit pull puppy. He is very energetic, but seems thin. He eats morning and evening, about 2 cups each sitting. Is there one dry dog food better than another to help him put on a little weight without taxing his digestive system (and my carpets)?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

Half the answer is in your question "He is very energetic"..... in other words he spends a lot of enery (the result: he is thin).  Don't worry about his weight, he will surely gain weight while he grows.  As per the prefered food: The best think to do is to try all kind of brands (for dog's food).  Soon you'll find out which one your dog prefers.  Please don't be hard at him, he is a puppy still......  meaning he is a baby and is still trying to learn all what the world is offering him.....  better teach him what to do and what not to do and you'll get your best friend doing exactly what you like.  It's a GR8 dog and very strong, never underestimate his powers.
Enjoy the weekend,

congrats on your new puppy!  pit bulls are such sweet and wonderful dogs.  did you know that they are called "nanny dogs"?  And that on temperment tests they score the same as golden retreivers?  Also, if anyone ever mentions the "locking jaw" thing, please let them know that it is a myth.  no dogs have locking jaws.

As for your puppy eating:  you should usually feed puppies 3 times a day, not 2.  They are growing so they need that extra meal.  I would recommend feeding him 1 1/2 cups of food, 3 times a day.  (When he reaches about 1 yr old, you should cut it back to only twice a day.)

Puppies are naturally a little thin because they are so energetic.  But you want to make sure that he doesnt have any allergies!  I would recommend Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy Food or Merrick Puppy Plate Dog Food.  We also like Wellness Super5Mix Puppy Food  and Innova Large Breed Puppy Food.  I hope this helps!!

Basically there are premium foods for pets, where they usually eat less and get more from it. But I wouldn't worry about your dog being thin. Obesity in dogs is no less dangerous than in humans, and a lean dog is usually healthier than a heavy set one.

Enjoy him :-)

Hi,

I hope you are enjoying your puppy.  He is thin because he is very active.  Please don't change his food around like one person advised!  This usually upsets a dog tummy.  Just give him a third feeding to compensate for his activity. Always take him out to potty after meals and right when he wakes up from a nap or from sleeping anytime.  Good luck with him.

Yes feed Iams, it is the best food out thee and it certainly put the muscle on my Pit. It is very good for the coat also.

you may not be feeding him enough.  it should depend on his weight.  my pit-bull mix puppy is also 5 months and she is supposed to get 4 to 5 cups of food a day according to the guidelines on her bag of food.  also, puppies should eat 3 to 4 times a day while they are growing.

Hi,I have a 3 1/2 months pitt.I feed my with Olroy dog food.I use to feed him purina brand he didnt gain much weight,So I change the food to Olroy,AND I see some progress on my puppy. He gain pretty fast on his body.I guess Olroy brand have alot of fat mix in there dog food.Try that first that my opinon. Later dude................

Congrats on the pit pup! I have 2 pits, 2 rotts and a chiahuahua myself! And prefer iams large breed,  pups, puppy food 3 times a day until 1 year of age. Use the chart on dog food bag as a guideline you will get to learn your dog.  Thins is ok right now as a pup as long as he has had all of his vacations and has been dewormed.  Dont rule out contracting something. Rule of thumb is if the ingredients list "corn anything" as their 1st or main ingredient it is full of fillers and has no nutritional value. Dont buy it, your dog will not get the nutrients he needs and go to the bathroom alot more than then he should,  dont switch dog food around to often and when you do keep enough of the old dog food to mix 2/4 to 1/2 of the old dog food in with the new dog food for a couple of days, this will keep him from getting diarrhia and keep your carpets.  Also,  2 or 3 times a month i cook plain white rice (very little or no salt with a chicken boullion cude) it is full of protien, they love it, & its cheap, 99cents for 16oz bag! Just not to often or they wont eat the dog food any more.  Pitbulls stomachs are a little more senstive and gassy than most dogs! Well enjoy your pooch!
