Try finding a car which parts are easily obtained, meaning not rare. Old Ford models - mid 80's and so on are known for their reliablity. If you're not an expert I suggest checking any car before buying it, in a garage. Don't excpect it to be flawless. Ask the garage employee/mechanic for advice whether to take it or not, considering the car's price. I'll be happy to write a basic list of stuff you should look in a car yourself even before testing it with a mechanic.
A friend of mine had a Ford and it was great. I also took a look at some of J. D. Power's recent reports and the Ford E-series are raked on top.
