To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

I live on a kibbutz, and I don't know if you have ever been to one, but you will always see dogs running freely and having a great life. We have had several Dobermans (I speak in the past tense because their owners have moved away but not because of their dogs), and there were all fantastic. They were so gently with the kids, and they never bothered any of the other dogs. The smaller dogs were the ones that caused the problems. As long as there is open space, there great.

Hey, I just saw your question.  And, Yes Dobbies were bred to be protectors.  Actually, a tax collector back in the 1800's had bred dobbies to protect him when he went into seedy places, so he wouldn't be robbed of the money he carried around with him.  Since then, they had bred the aggressiveness out of them, but they are still very dependable protectors.  They are great with children.  I had one myself, Blackjack.  You made a great choice, be proud when you walk him around the neighboorhood.
