I own a ranch home, where would i benefit more, placing a pellet stove in the basement and let the heat rise up into the house or a fireplace insert

Neither, I lived in Maine for a while and they are way ahead of alot of us as far as alternative heating and saving $ on oil. This is my only credential. If the pellet stove is in basement is separated by floor...actually as I recall we put vents in floors for heat to get to second floor but the stove goes in house. It is not too much of a complication or expense to put necessary ventilation from inside house to outside as I recall. Please remember I am no expert on this matter. I would like to bring up something my brother and uncle have been getting into (for their own houses and as a business just starting out) and that is geotherm. Warm house in winter and cools in summer. Saves big bucks and uses good old mother nature herself.
