The following site by the US Department of Energy contains the information you are looking for. They recommend a setting of 120°F for most uses for comfortable hot water.

most water heater have a spot that makes the spot where they work the best. it will save you money and should give you enough hot water that is not to hot

Just a old Country Boy, would give you the shirt off my back, just don't try to take without asking first.....

Being in the apartment industry as long as I was I found most resideents like their hot water so I always started with 140* then uf the resident weren't happy either due to the recover time due to the family size I would adjust it to 150* I never would set one above 160*  Not far from that temperature you start reaching scalding temps.  I realize the Dept of Energy states 120* but I would run out in a little while if I set mine that low and somebody would be taking a cold shower.

changed upper theromstat and now it won't shut off automatically it stays on until the water is boiling hot, and then I have to reset it again to turn it back on.
