How difficult is it to change careers ?

I am a school teacher. How difficult is it to change careers in your 40s?

The bottom line is your salary- at least at the beginning. It all depends if you are willing to do something you enjoy more on a low salary then to do something you have  squeezed the joy out of for more. At the beginning it might be difficult and people will think you are crazy but if you believe in something and you are fed up with being a teacher go for it.

Hi,


I am answering based on my own ecperience: It's very difficult, specially in your age.  That's the pure truth.  However it can be done !.  It needs guts and a very strong character.  You'll have to be ready to live under pressure and uncertainty.  You'll have to take risks and have sleepless nights.  If you are ready for all that go for it.  If not, better stay in your present job.  Sorry if I disscouraged you a bit but that's the pure truth.

It is not at all easy but it can be done. The major problem is that most employers look for younger people because they are willing to accept low salaries and fringe benefits cost less. You should select a career where you have a competitive advantage to surmount employer discrimination. If you don't, take a course that will give it to you. Above all, don't quit before you have a job.

Hi,

     I am a Registered Nurse and I think at 40 you are not old to start in the Health Care field.  It will probably take you 3-4 years to finish Nursing since a lot of your subjects will get credited towards the prerequisite subjects.  You don't get discriminated in Nursing and there are a lot of different specialties that you could be in.  You could be a School Nurse too.  This fields pays a lot more than teaching.
