It depend on why you want to eat. As we all know, hunger is only one reason for wanting food. There are others, like being used to be eating a certain amount of meals even when not hungry, or because food taste good and because food is comforting, or because we are thirsty or because we just want something in our mouths.
Chewing gum will help skip a snack or a small meal if you are actually not hungry and just wanting something in your mouth, or if you are eating out of boredom and stress. The chewing gives the body the illusion of eating and so, that pang of "I want to eat now" might subside for a while. However, if your body need food or your wanting to eat actually comes from hunger, it would make things worst - the body is being fooled by the chewing motion to think it is eating and so the digestive system start working.
So, don't replace food with gums first thing in the morning, or you might get an ulcer, also, don't over do it with the gum, I know someone who started chewing gum all the time to get over wanting to smoke, she had to have all of her fillings replace after a while because the gum loosened them up.
Try drinking a glass of water instead, I think it works better and also healthier.
