I've always had this pretty bad. I can eat a moderate and balanced meal - some lean protein (like chicken breast) with lots of veggies and a bit of healthy fats - like a stir fry and after a reasonable portion I am satisified. Then about an hour later I have INTENSE hunger pangs - I mean it feels like I haven't ate all day, I will get light-headed, irritable and just plain old stomach aches from the hunger. Then it seems I can eat and eat and nothing satisifies and of course in that extreme hunger I'm not as careful with my choices. This pattern caused me to gain nearly 100 lbs before I found a doctor that diagnosed me with "reactive hypoglycemia". Now I eat a diet and use a blood glucose meter like a diabetic and with eating 6x a day (which I had done before also) and using the meter to see what foods affect me and how (lots of journaling) I feel much better and I'm also losing weight.
I have no idea how common reactive hypoglycemia is but it may be worth looking in to. I wasn't able to find out about it with the first doctor - they just tested my fasting glucose. I finally found out when a doctor tested my glucose when I was having one of these "hunger attacks" right after a lunch and my reading was 32.
In my case if I have a high -carbohydrate meal it seems that within about an hour my blood sugar goes dangerously low.
Just an idea - may not apply to you but maybe to someone reading this question!
