Diamonds were first discovered in India between 3000 and 6000 years ago, they were used for decorating religious icons. You can read more about the history of diamonds and the different types here:

Hi, Just saw the movie "Blood Diamond" yesterday and was really affected by it. I've done some reading on diamonds and especially on blood diamonds over the web. Anyway, the first diamonds referenced, were mined in India.
