How can I detach an email from a Gmail conversation?

Gmail automatically consolidates related emails into a conversation thread. I love this feature but sometimes I want to act on a specific mail from a conversation (for example add a label to it) and I cant because it is now part of the thread.

How to I detach an email from the Gmail thread so it appears independently in my inbox as a standalone email?

I don't know of a way to detach the message so that it appears at the original date from the original sender.  What I do is to send the individual message to myself (by forwarding or replying to that message) with a edited subject heading.  It's not a perfect solution; but at least it allows you to view and label the message separately.
