I am staying at someone elses house for a while and want to access the internet through my laptop and not thier desktop. I tried plugging my laptop into the desktop modem but it said connection was not working. I have done the same thing at my house and had it work fine.

Maybe the connection is equipped with security measures. Did your OS recognize the modem at all. You might need to downland the modem drivers.

Did you get the home owner's permission to use his computer? It might be, because of security precautions he downloaded a special procedure.
