Can one person build a web site that compete with the big ones?

Well, I have an idea for a great web site at my country. The only thing that is bother me is that I can't play in the field with big ones. They have a lot of money, lots of workers, and I'm alone only have idea that need my attention. It's scares me a bit, because I want it to be one of the top 10 web site in my country. Is it possible to do that all alone? I know what to do and how, I just need the time and probably the courage.

It's exactly as you had put it. People do not care whether the website is managed privately or by a big company. If the idea is original, and the main issue is close to a big crowd/group of Internet users, plenty of traffic will follow. Go for it.

Well, youtube started as a private thing, and actually so did Apple, so probably yes.
