What are decision support systems?

What are decision support systems? Are they a type of system (like a CRM or ERP system) or is it a term used to refer to systems that help provide information for decisions? I am looking for any specific information – classes, books, stories, interviews, – on the topic but anything will do.

I built a few DSS system ; in the 80 this was really new stuff and I used packages like EPS/FCS and such.

Then new software emerged , and it was much easier to build DSS

The main idea was to be able to take huge data bases , and to show the content to the high level management in a clear and graphical way , then to give them the option to drill down in the data shown.

Here is a good link to learn about DSS.

Guerrilla tactics and business ideas in a world of Web 2.0, SaaS, OSS - Blog: Business Two Zero

Decision Support Systems was a term used regualrly back in the 80s, but seen less often now.  It was a broad term, open to much interpretation but most often seemed to involve the kind of reporting and analysis tools that, today, would be referred to as business intelligence.  Around the same time the term Exectuvie Information System was often used almost interchangeably.  In both cases the terms were open to abuse, with some software vendors calling their reporting environment a DSS or an EIS if it contained any visual representation like a pie chart.  Wikipedia has some good material on the topic.
