I think its a factor of who asked who out. Normally when a guy asks you out he says "can I buy you a drink/dinner/lunch?". Therefore he should, but if a girl asks a guy out then she should.

It depends on what you want to establish in your future relationship, I would think.  For me, I would never accept a man who did not pay for every date, and that is me.  For another person, like my daughters, they would feel it is fine to each take turns paying in the future, so it would be pretty much fine for either to pay for the date, or both.

I think there is no right or wrong, as much as you need to assert what it is you desire for yourself in a relationship.  You can pretend it is ok for the guy to have you pay, if you are a woman, but if you don't actually feel that way, it is not going to be a relationship that works.

If you are a man who desires to have a sharing type of financial approach, then there is your answer perhaps?  If you are like my husband and like to pay for everything, then you would want to pay for the first date as well.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

I read all answers and would like to add several points:
1.  It depends on the sum.  If it's a small amount of money
     the male should pay.
2.  It also depends how old they are.  If they are teenagers
who do not have yet an income, it would be right to share
     the costs.
3.  For adults, it depends how long they know each other. If
they know each other for long time the male should pay.
If they hardly know each other it will be nice if the lady
will offer to share the costs and let the gentleman either
     accept it or not.
4.  The 1st date should be romantic and not a kind of
"Establishing the future relation" and "setting the
     terms".....
Best regards,
