Can dad add himself to son's savings account????

My son opened a savings account in the second grade as a school project.  The children would add money to the account every wednesday, this was also done as a promo with our local small town bank so only this particular banking insitution was in on the project.

At the time of opening the account I was a single mother and had put only mine and my son's name on the account as it was requested to complete the paper work so he could begin his project.  Also I am the sole custodial parent.

This is where it get's sticky.... My son's father (whom I was never married to) had a sister who was a branch manager for this bank.  Sometime during the maintainence of the savings account she has added his fathers name to the account.  Father has significant money problems, so I am having my son close the account and we will take the money to another bank where dad has no "family connections".

My question is, was it legal to add his name to an account without me or my son's authorization?????

Any help would be appreciated.........

no, your written authorization is required. go to another bank, preferably the one your changing the account to, and explain what happened, i'm sure that they will be able to clarify this situation so that you can press charges. or not, your call.

Live simply, love generously, care deeply,

speak kindly, leave the rest to God.

What the child's dad did was not legal.  It's better to open another account in another bank.

The father's sister needs to be reported to her superior.  This is not legal and is against all privacy policies.  You, as the sole custodial parent, are the only one who can authorize another person to be added to the account.  If the account was set up as a minor account, not even the son can close the account.  Once your son turned 18, you would be the only person who could authorize the bank to change the status of the account to a joint account and a new signature card would have to be completed and signed by both you and your son.
