My son is in first grade in the USA. He receives a homework folder on Monday and he must do all the work in the folder by Friday. He usually has math, reading, spelling. In class, they work on other skills such as science and social studies (history, geography). In my opinion, the amount  of homework American children is given is too much.

 My son's school uses Houghton Mifflin books to help with reading. Most of the other worksheets are created by the teachers.
