What curriculum do your school use for frist graders? And how is home work sent home, what days!
My son is in first grade and his school is using Everyday Math as their math curriculum, Words Their Way as their words/spelling curriculum and they are using a trade book based curriculum for reading.
Homework comes home daily (except Fridays) and it is written in an assignment book by the student (for example, "math worksheet" may be written under today's date). The parents are required to sign the book to show that they have seen the assignment. It is often a math game that a parent or sibling plays with the child, but can also be a phonics worksheet or a math worksheet. Homework doesn't take more than ten minutes to complete.
The students at my kids' school are also asked to read nightly. They signed a contract at the beginning of the year stating that they would read for a certain time each night.
My son is in first grade in the USA. He receives a homework folder on Monday and he must do all the work in the folder by Friday. He usually has math, reading, spelling. In class, they work on other skills such as science and social studies (history, geography). In my opinion, the amount of homework American children is given is too much.
My son's school uses Houghton Mifflin books to help with reading. Most of the other worksheets are created by the teachers.
