Is no credit good or bad?

If I have no credit at all, then what do I have to do to establish my credit?

it depends on a person if he wants to have a credit or not, but its good to have one, just for emergency purposes. Be sure that you are responsible enough to handle it in order for you to stay of debt. ;)

The best way to establish credit is too take out a secured credit card.  These cards use your own money given to them in advance.  The positive thing is that thney report to the credit bureaus, which will establish credit for you.  Another way is to get on some ones account as an "authorized user".  You do not have to use the card but their history will show up as your as well.  Make sure that they have a good history because if they don't you can get hurt.  Use a parent or family member that has had the card for a long time.

First of all, do you have any bills you are currently paying on like utility bills, car insurance, rent???  If you have been paying them on time for at least one to two years, those would be considered alternate tradelines of credit.  You can actually have these items added to your credit report before you go apply for credit so the perspective creditor will see your credit worthiness.  It may not generate you a score, but they will see you pay your bills on time.  The way to do this is to ask your creditors (people who you do pay bills to right now on a monthly basis) and ask them for a letter of credit.  Once you get them, you can send them to each of the credit bureaus.

You can always start with a secured credit card.  Check with your local bank you use to see if they have secured credit cards.  Make sure you keep a low balance on the card at all time.  After about 3 or 4 months you will have generated a credit score.  Make sure to pay all payments ON TIME on your starter card.  In about 6 months, if you want to try to get an unsecured card or a store acct, you can do that, but only one.  Make sure before you have them pull your credit, you ask them if they report to all 3 bureaus.  If not, I would probably find someplace else to get an acct because you want to improve all your scores, not just one or two.

You dont want to bite off more than you can chew.  Just because you may, for example, have a $1000 credit line, does not mean you have to use the entire $1000.  Try not to go over 30% and by all means, make more than the minimum payment.  If you can pay off the entire balance each month, even better.

Slowly you will start to build your credit.  It will not be done over night so be patient.  Make sure to take care of your credit by not letting just anyone pull it and pay all bills by the due date.  Late payments can cause interest rates to rise thus putting you into a higher risk catagory.

If you take care of your credit it will be ready for you when you are ready for it.

I hope this info helps you in your future decisions.  Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Good luck

Anne
