How to create a distressed wood finish that looks like furniture from Mexico.

We need to know how to create the distressed mexican wood seen in furniture from Mexico. I believe it is pine, and I am guessing that to get the grain raised and roughened we need to either sand blast it or use a wire stripper. In addition to the regular pecan colored wood, we also need to apply some paints that look as if they were once very bright but now have aged. Any advice is most welcome!
