You could try using "Iron-on Transfer Paper" - It's available at Wal-mart, Target, Office Supplies, etc. - Look for it where the specialty printer paper is sold.

Hey roadlady, Even though your idea was on the right track, it did'nt get the job done. All the transfer papers leave a plastic film on the material that is almost impossible to remove. I came across a Hot Iron Transfer Pencil and drew over the lines of the piece I wanted to embroider. It did the trick. I got it from Colonial Patterns.com .
