Do counter top overlays work?

I'm tired of my old butcher block type kitchen counter tops but can't afford to change them all out.  A friend told me there is a product that goes over existing counter tops and looks and acts like granite (supposedly non-porous, heat and scratch resistant).  Have you ever heard of it?  Does it work?
