I'm not sure whether it's the best or not. But it does trap a layer of air which used as an insulator between your body and the surroundings. The woolly structure help it trap air incredibly good.

That is not necessarily true. You will find that the best of mountaineering clothing use artificial or mixtures of various natural wools from animals such as the llama. The principle is the same however, the fibers trap air that is heated by your body to keep you warm.
