Do you have Radiant Guard in your attic? Before I did all this mumbo jumbo  in the other answers I would look at getting radiant guard installed in my attic  & reduce the temperature of the attic & the need for A/C to begin with.  People use this product with success in Texas & Texas gets a whole lot hotter than NC. It has reduced my A/C requirements by 1/3 in the summer

Well, I searched radiant barriers and determined the best self installed price would be $0.12/sf.  Then I checked these tables:

http://www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs+walls/radiant/rb_tables.html#table1

And for my location and current level of insulation in Table 4, I would save about $0.08/sf over 25 years.

It doesn't add up unless I'm reading it wrong.

Oh really , It depends on the cost of your Electricity. My electricity costs .12 cents per KWatt hour  it just went up  this Spring.  In my 3200sq ft home with a single  3.5Ton Rheem 13.3 SEER a/c unit  and a 2.5 5 bedroom house. My Electric bills is 150  per month while most of my associates bills are 220 per month.

I installed my Radiant Guard myself and then I gave some to my brother after he saw that even on a 100 degree day outside I had no problem going up into my attic to retrieve something because that attic temps didn't exceed  99 degrees.

GLTA.
