Barbados Rum Cake recipe calls for food browning. What is this?
I don't think this is a Recipes4us recipe but in answer to your question, browing often comes in the form of a very dark thick liquid which contains caramel and is used to add a brown colour to food. The amount usually needed doesn't really add any flavour or other attribute to a recipe - just colour.

Barbados Chocolate Rum Cake: Jim Coleman Recipes.
Cake Ingredients
Glaze Ingredients
Either grease or spray a 10-inch bundt pan. In a mixer, beat the cake mix, the pudding mix, the eggs, olive oil, water, olive oil, rum and sugar on high speed for 2 - 3 minutes. Pour the batter in to the bundt and place in a 325 oven for 50 minutes to an hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean. While the cake is baking, in a saucepan, combine butter, white sugar, the white rum and the water and bring to a boil and cook for 3 -5 minutes. When you take the rum cake out of the oven, flip it over on a rack on a cookie sheet, and immediately pour the glaze over the cake while it's still warm.

Karla,
I have your answer. Kitchen Buoquet Browning and Seasoning Sauce. The main ingredient in it is carmel. It is usually used to make gravy browner so it has that dark look to it.....but, of course, you would not use it in like chicken gravy because people like that creamy colored.
Now.........ask clerk by name where it is. Then you can check to see if there is a straight browning without the seasonings.
Hope this helps..........Di
Looks like this one has the dark rum and dark brown sugar which could take care of the brown color she is searching for in her recipe. Di
The Food Lady
Food browning is a favorite ingredient to many Island recipes. It is nothing more than cooked sugar browned in a pan. It is sold in bottles in Caribbean food store. I live in Florida, so my local food store sells it. They have one for fish and one for meat and an all purpose one. It is slightly sweet and not at all salty. It is used to enhance the color of the foods while giving it a rich flavor to blend with the other ingredients. You really should try it in a lot of recipes. It works wonders in the crock pot. It will give beef a nice rich color. Hope this helps.
