Hi Debbie -
There is nothing wrong with defrosting in the fridge.
It is much better (in my opinion) than defrosting in the microwave, which is basically sending shorter bursts of microwaves to the food, rather than a constant blast to cook. Its very easy to start cooking the tips or outside of whatever you are defrosting and the results can be unappealing.
The only downside I can see in defrosting something in the fridge (and I've done this sometimes) is that you take something from the freezer, put it in the fridge and then let it sit there for too long. If you are good about remembering when you moved it over, and don't let it sit for too long, its the safest and most recommended thawing method.
The most dangerous (specially for pregnant women) is defrosting on the counter top. As soon as the meat/product is out of refrigeration bacteria and other bugs can start reproducing and accumulating as the whole piece thaws.
Hope this helps! Best, Itay.
