Why are you convinced that the swine flu shot is safe?

Why please explain how you can feel confident that the swine flu shot has been properly tested when drugs that are on the market for years with FDA approval and are then withdrawn when enough people get sick or dye from them.  Since this is considered a mild condition for healthy people why should we take the chance of getting a more serious condition such as happened in 1976?  Is it not more sensible to prevent by building your immune system to its best level and taking precautions such as frequent hand washing?  If you do catch it and stay in bed etc. you will get over it without nasty side effects?
