One Laptop Per Child

I'm intrigued by the Give 1 Get 1 offer from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC).  I've seen both positive and negative comments about the XO computer.  Is it worth buying the XO-1 for my child to use -- in a few years, when she's old enough to appreciate it -- and for another child to use now?  Or should I wait for the XO-2 or some other alternative?

The idea behind Give 1 Get 1 is to get the laptop's to the children who need them, by enticing people to get one for themselves. From a philantropic standpoint, it is a good idea, and maybe in a few years when your child can understand this, they will appreciate the action even more.

I agree with your view.  But I wonder whether the children -- both my child and another child -- would be more appreciative if I waited until OLPC or someone else created a better computer.  This computer seems impressive now; but Moore's Law suggests that three years of improvements could lead to a much better computer.  The XO-1 might be a good beginning -- but is it good enough?
