My computer talks to me and I want it to shut up!

I have a MAC and was trying to figure out how to delete a message that never got sent. I asked the help menu how to delete a message and it gave me instructions. Somehow, I got the voiceover turned on and I do not know how to turn it off! It talks to me every time I touch the computer. I can see just fine and do not need this feature. If anyone has a MAC and can tell me how to turn it off I would be most grateful. Also, a black box outline is now on my screen and I can't turn that off either.

TURNING OFF the TALKING FEATURE on MAC COMPUTERS ...

Yes Mac's will talk to you, you can listen to what is said in chat room from across room with VOICE turned out .. like being read to.  You can even select the voice you like best among numerous choices.

TO TURN IT ON OR OFF ...

1.  Click open APPLE MENU (the apple pic on top left of your top tool bar)

2.  Click on SYSTEM PREFERANCES

3.  See the 4 groups which include "SYSTEM" and  see "SPEECH" in that group

4.  Click on SPEECH and then click on "SPEECH RECOGNITION" and the first think you should see (at top) is the "SPEAKABLE ITEMS" OFF/ON switch, and select "OFF".
