There is no NEED to shut down a computer at night, but consider:

1. You will save on your electric bill. Also help the environment.

2. Reduce the wear and tear on your computer. It will last longer.

3. Rebooting your computer is usually helpful in keeping your computer running properly.

I forgot to add this to my answer.

When the computer is on it draws in cooling air as well as dust and dirt. Too much of it will harm your computer eventually. Either way you should remove any accumulation periodically. I've only had to it twice a year.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Read this blog for the true answer. I turn mine off because I can't sleep with it on.

It's actually not possible for me to shut my computer down Every night because it has to be on for my system to be scanned for viruses.

I don't know if you really have to shut down every night but I usally do let mine go into hibernate mode. I also usally restart my computer and clear the cach every day so it will clear some of the memory.
